Approval milestone for East Fremantle social housing project

A new social housing project at 7-27 Canning Highway, East Fremantle has reached an important milestone, with the Statutory Planning Committee approving the proposed $20.9 million development.

 

TBB Planning supported H-U and Foundation Housing through the planning approvals process for the project, which will be delivered and project-managed by H-U on behalf of Foundation Housing.

The approved proposal will deliver 34 long-term social housing apartments in a well-located urban area close to public transport, local shops, services and the broader Fremantle strategic centre. The three-storey development includes a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments, supported by on-site parking, secure bicycle and e-scooter facilities, communal open space and landscaped street frontages.

The site was identified through the State Government’s Housing Diversity Pipeline initiative, which seeks to unlock underutilised government-owned land for social and affordable housing in well-connected locations. The project is also supported through Round 2 of the Commonwealth’s Housing Australia Future Fund.

The design responds to the site’s prominent position on Canning Highway, East Street and Glyde Street, with a focus on residential amenity, active street presentation, landscaping and sustainable design measures. Key features include a central landscaped courtyard, 47 proposed trees, naturally cross-ventilated apartments, improved energy performance and provision for future electric vehicle charging.

This approval represents a positive step towards increasing the supply of secure, well-located social housing in East Fremantle.
