The Goal

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) play a critical role in supporting Western Australia’s transition to renewable energy. By absorbing electricity from the grid and discharging it when demand is highest, BESS infrastructure improves network stability, supports capacity requirements and enables greater uptake of renewable generation.

TBB has provided planning and approvals support for multiple BESS projects across regional Western Australia, including facilities located within established energy precincts and industrial areas.

Our Role

TBB supports BESS projects from early planning advice through to development approval, working closely with proponents, local governments and State agencies. Our role typically includes identifying the most appropriate approval pathway, preparing development application documentation and managing engagement with determining authorities.

Given the emerging nature of BESS within local planning frameworks, our work often involves addressing ‘use not listed’ considerations, coordinating specialist technical inputs and clearly articulating the planning merits of each proposal to support timely and robust decision-making.

The Outcome

TBB-supported BESS projects have achieved development approval across multiple jurisdictions, helping fast-track delivery of essential energy infrastructure. Our early engagement approach and clear planning strategy have supported efficient assessment processes and favourable outcomes, providing greater certainty for clients delivering infrastructure that underpins a more resilient and sustainable energy system.
