City of Greater Geraldton Planning Strategy

The Goal

Following the amalgamation of three local governments, the City needed a clear and unified planning direction. The goal was to simplify a complex planning environment, align growth priorities and provide a long-term vision that supports housing, employment and infrastructure while responding to Geraldton’s unique coastal and regional context.

Our Role

Working alongside the City and a multidisciplinary consultant team, TBB Planning supported the preparation of a consolidated Local Planning Strategy and Planning Scheme. Our role focused on bringing together existing studies, policies and community input into a single, accessible framework.

The approach prioritised collaboration and early engagement with stakeholders and state agencies. By testing ideas, resolving issues early and maintaining momentum, the project was able to progress efficiently while ensuring the strategy reflected local aspirations and practical delivery considerations.

The Outcome

The City of Greater Geraldton now has a single, coherent planning framework that guides decision-making across the entire local government area. The new Strategy and Scheme replaced multiple legacy documents, reducing administrative complexity and providing greater certainty for the community, investors and decision-makers.

The framework supports housing diversity, employment growth and infrastructure planning over the long term, while responding to regional challenges and opportunities. For the City, it provides a practical foundation for daily planning decisions and future strategic work. For the community, it delivers a clearer understanding of how Geraldton can grow and evolve in a coordinated and sustainable way.
