The Goal
The project set out to deliver a contemporary terrace housing model that responds to growing demand for medium-density living in inner Perth. The focus was on flexibility, sustainability and design quality, while respecting the character of Como and demonstrating how the “missing middle” can be delivered in established neighbourhoods.

Our Role
Working collaboratively with the architect team and specialist consultants, TBB Planning supported the development approval process for the project. Our role focused on guiding the proposal through a complex planning framework while maintaining the integrity of the design and sustainability ambitions.
This included coordinating technical inputs, responding to further information requests and supporting the proposal through engagement with the City of South Perth and JDAP. Careful interpretation of the planning framework allowed innovative terrace housing outcomes to be considered and ultimately supported.
The Outcome
Como Townhouses secured development approval for ten architecturally distinctive terrace homes, delivering a rare example of high-quality medium-density housing in inner Perth. The project was recognised by the JDAP as a strong response to the city’s “missing middle”, offering an alternative to traditional apartments or grouped dwellings.
The approved design prioritises sustainability, targeting significant reductions in carbon impact through energy efficiency, passive design and water-sensitive initiatives. Landscaping celebrates local native species and contributes to improved urban biodiversity. For the local community, the project introduces well-designed homes that add vitality, passive surveillance and architectural quality to the streetscape, setting a positive benchmark for future infill development.
