The Geraldton Fishing Boat Harbour required a clear and shared direction to support future growth while remaining a safe, functional working harbour. The focus was on balancing marine industry needs with public access, tourism and place quality, ensuring the harbour could evolve without losing its role as a critical regional asset.

Our Role
Working alongside the Mid West Ports Authority and a multidisciplinary consultant team, TBB Planning supported the development of a harbour-wide plan that brought together operational priorities, future investment opportunities and public realm aspirations into a single, coordinated framework.
The approach was highly collaborative, using workshops and stakeholder engagement to draw out ideas from across port operations, industry users and community interests. This allowed opportunities, constraints and trade-offs to be tested spatially, helping inform decisions that protect long-term infrastructure while enabling flexibility as the harbour evolves.
The Outcome
The Geraldton Fishing Boat Harbour Development Plan now provides a clear and adaptable framework to guide change over the next 10–20 years. The plan identifies staged opportunities for marine facilities, public spaces, tourism uses and supporting infrastructure, helping the harbour respond to operational needs while improving legibility, safety and access for visitors.
Importantly, the framework supports investment confidence by setting clear expectations for development, movement and public realm improvements. For the Mid West Ports Authority, it offers a practical tool to manage growth over time. For the Geraldton community, it reinforces the harbour’s role as both a working port and a welcoming ocean gateway to the region.
