The Goal
The project aimed to rethink the role of Great Eastern Highway beyond a transport corridor, repositioning it as a place that supports jobs, housing, movement and everyday activity. The focus was on improving walkability, public realm quality and land use integration, while supporting economic growth and long-term redevelopment opportunities.
Reimagining a major highway as a connected urban boulevard and destination.
Our Role
Working in partnership with the City of Belmont and a multidisciplinary consultant team, TBB Planning supported the development of a corridor-wide strategy to guide future change along Great Eastern Highway.
The approach brought together land use planning, urban design, transport thinking and economic analysis, supported by strong community and stakeholder engagement. This collaborative process helped test opportunities and constraints, align competing interests and build confidence in a shared long-term direction for the corridor.
The Outcome
The Great Eastern Highway Corridor Strategy established a clear and coordinated framework to guide redevelopment over time. It identified where growth could occur, how different land uses could transition sensitively, and how public spaces and movement networks could be improved to support a more people-friendly environment.
The work shifted expectations for the corridor, helping move it from a car-dominated arterial toward a more balanced urban place that supports living, working and local activity. For the City of Belmont, the strategy provides clarity and certainty to guide investment and decision-making. For the wider community, it sets the foundation for a safer, more connected and more vibrant urban corridor.
