The Goal
The project aimed to reinvigorate Newman Town Centre by building on previous revitalisation efforts and shifting focus toward people, place and everyday experience. The goal was to create a centre that the community could identify with, one that supports local business, encourages activity and provides a stronger sense of identity and belonging.

Our Role
Working with the Shire of East Pilbara and specialist consultants, TBB Planning supported the preparation of the Newman Town Centre Development Strategy. Our role focused on bringing together research, engagement and local insight into a clear and practical framework for change.
Community and stakeholder engagement was central to the process. Listening posts, surveys, interviews and workshops captured local aspirations and tested ideas as they evolved. The strategy was shaped in close collaboration with the Shire’s Executive Team and Elected Members, ensuring it reflected both community priorities and delivery realities.
The Outcome
The Newman Town Centre Development Strategy provides a clear, place-led framework to guide investment and improvement over time. It identifies opportunities to enhance public spaces, improve streetscapes, strengthen pedestrian connections and support a mix of business and residential activity within the town centre.
Importantly, the strategy moves beyond vision setting by identifying quick wins, priority actions and implementation responsibilities to maintain momentum. For the Shire, it offers a practical tool to coordinate decision-making and future investment. For the Newman community, it establishes a shared direction for a town centre that feels active, welcoming and reflective of local identity.
