The Goal

Spoilbank Marina began with a simple ambition: transform an underused stretch of coastline into a meaningful destination that celebrates local culture and brings people back to the water. Our early work helped shape the vision and define a clear direction for a marina precinct that could create social, cultural and economic opportunities for the Pilbara community.

Our Role

Our involvement began in 2013, exploring concepts for a marina precinct and identifying Spoilbank as the most suitable and future-ready location. We then worked with State and local partners to prepare the Masterplan and Place Plan, ensuring culture and community aspirations guided every decision.

A big part of our role was navigating a complex planning environment — with land controlled by multiple agencies — and charting a clear path to development approval. We also designed and facilitated a series of engagement activities, from interviews to visioning workshops, giving the Hedland community and the Kariyarra people a genuine voice in shaping the precinct.

This planning framework supported detailed design and ultimately enabled the project to move confidently into delivery.

The Outcome

Spoilbank Marina has delivered a lively new gathering place for Hedland, combining boating facilities with public spaces, cultural elements and opportunities for year-round events. It has strengthened coastal access, improved safety for recreational boaters and created a destination the community can be proud of. Its opening in 2024 marks a major step forward for Port Hedland’s waterfront and its future identity.
