The Goal
The Australian Automation & Robotics Precinct was established to create a world-leading environment for testing, research and development across automation, robotics and emerging technologies. The goal was to provide industry and government with a flexible, fit-for-purpose precinct that could support rapid innovation while positioning Western Australia as a global leader in advanced industrial capability.
Creating a flexible testing environment to accelerate innovation across automation, robotics and emerging industries.
Our Role
TBB supported DevelopmentWA in enabling early delivery of the Australian Automation & Robotics Precinct through targeted statutory planning advice and development approvals.
Building on our prior involvement in the Neerabup Industrial Area structure planning, we were engaged to prepare development applications in a staged and sequential manner to optimise timeframes and reduce approval risk.
A key challenge was facilitating approval for a research and development centre use that was not specifically listed in the City of Wanneroo’s local planning scheme. TBB pursued an alternative approval pathway to establish a lawful land use outcome, providing certainty while longer-term planning processes progressed.
We worked closely with the client, project team and local government to ensure approvals were in place to support government announcements and enable timely delivery of temporary and initial site facilities.
The Outcome
The planning approach enabled the Australian Automation & Robotics Precinct to be formally announced by the State Government in October 2021, securing early momentum for delivery of Australia’s first dedicated automation and robotics testing precinct. The approved framework supports development of initial test beds, access routes and site facilities, with future stages to deliver a shared common user testing facility.
Once fully realised, the 51-hectare precinct will support a wide range of industries including mining, construction, defence, agriculture and space, creating new opportunities for research, skills development and job creation while strengthening Western Australia’s position as a global leader in automation and robotics.
